PROJECT 1: FAMOUS PEOPLE . FAMILIAR FACES - DIAGRAMMATIC ABSTRACTION

The main objective of the first project is to explore how spaces are created from the making of architectural elements: architectonics - through solid, planes, lines and frames. From this project, students will be able to achieve a level of understanding on the works assigned and will be able to apply the idea and concept to their later projects. The idea of using pure and diagrammatic models to express the architectural idea would also be in cooperated into this assignment, where students will learn the ability to identify master architects and their works. Most important part would be to learn how to 'diagram' and analyse architectural work of selected master architect. This is a group project, where students need to cooperate and work hand in hand to analyse and complete it.

PROJECT 2A: INTRODUCTION TO SITE ANALYSIS + PAVILION @ NATIONAL BOTANICAL GARDEN SHAH ALAM

PROJECT 2B: RETREAT HOUSE @ NATIONAL BOTANICAL GARDEN SHAH ALAM

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN STUDIO II

We will be learning about site analysis and ways to properly conduct them, be it macro or micro level of the overall site. Since it is a site of a larger scale, a team leader is elected, and then further divided into subgroups with sub group leaders in each sub group. The sub groups include : 1) Site plan 2) Existing structure 3) Landscape 4) Climatic Studies 5) Circulation pattern 6) views and vistas 7) Activities 8) Case Studies. Each and every group will be responsible for their task given, and will later be compile into a master slide, where everyone can access and look for information there. It will be used throughout the rest of the semester.

For project 2a, in a group of 2, we are required to design a pavilion with maximum volume of 30m3 for the purpose of relaxation and pleasure. It can also include other activites, in which furniture and equipments must fit and be incorporated into the design. The structure itself should correspond to the site that is chosen. Adequate access, circulation and fenestration are mandatory.

The aim of the project would be to generate structure, form and space through architectural conceptualisation. with the emphasis on the user requirement, ergonomics and site responding to develop an architectural propostion. Art or crafting and making is an important tool as part of the design process.

Based on the site analysis from project 2a, we are required to continue, to further develop our project 2a, into a retreat house at National Botanical Garden. The retreat house must function as habitable architectural spaces to enable the activity associated with living, dining, showering, cooking and such within the built up space of 150m2. The relationship between the design and the context is also important in making the retreat unique to its landscape and activity. Main objectives of this project is to introduce the notions of concepts, program and process in architectural design, to understand of specific user design requirements, to introduce the notions of space, form and function in architectural design, and to introduce the awareness of site specific design and the process of site analysis.
