PROJECT 1: CASE STUDY OF BUILDING SERVICES IN PUBLIC BUILDINGS

You are required to form a group of 5 to 6 members. Under the tutelage of a lecturer, each group is required to choose one multi-storey building as a case study to analyse the following systems associated to building services: i. mechanical ventilation ii. air-conditioning system iii. fire protection system (active and passive fire protection system) iv. mechanical transportation system (elevator and escalator/ travellator systems) Each group will need to document their findings accordingly. It is entirely up to the group members to delegate the tasks to each of their members. The purpose of this assignment is to familiarize students with the application of building systems, which in future can be applied to their design proposals. Thus, demonstrating their understanding in building operations.

PROJECT 2: Application of Building Services

Students will use their Design Studio final project for this assignment. The purpose of this exercise is to familiarize the students with the application of the systems and apply them in the design proposals. It will also demonstrate the students’ understanding in applying what they have learnt from the module. It must have a site plan, building plans and roof plan. Students will demonstrate their understanding of building services by providing the most appropriate systems for the building, which include: i) electrical supply system ii) cold water and hot water supply system iii) sewerage and sanitary system iv) rainwater/ surface water drainage system These systems form part the plans for Building Plan Approval to Local Authorities. Hence, it is essential for an architect to understand the systems well.
