PROJECT 1: JOURNEY OF THE 5 SENSES

In a group of 4-5 people, we are required to first, look for 2 precedent studies. One of it has to be pre-modern, while the other has to be of contemporary architecture. Furthermore, one has to be of linear and the other has to be of concentric building typology. We are required to do thorough analysis regarding this 2 chosen building, then in the next assignment design 2 buildings according to those building typology, which is a linear and a concentric one. Through this assignment, we will be able to identify different building typologies, and design more according to spatial experience. It is also a tough challenge to complete the sets of boards using different digital software.

Using the same group as project 1, we are required to visit a place, conduct site analysis in terms of macro and micro scale. This is considered as the starting point for further projects. It is a fundamental need for any design project as it will suggest a series of parameters to suggest architectural solution, one that will be appropriate to the place and its meaning, and contributes to its context. In our case, we were being dispatch to Kuala Sepetang, where it is where we conduct the analysis on a macro level. It is then displaced into 3 micro sites, particularly the mangrove forest, the charcoal factory and the fishing village.

PROJECT 2B : PERSONAL INTERPRETATION AND CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

Proceeding after the group site analysis boards, we are required to interpret individually, among the three sites, which is more interesting, then do a deeper and more thorough research accordingly. Then, come out with a conceptual design on a Visitor Interpretive Centre. This interim submission will guide and assesses students on the schematic design phase where we must show how our conceptual ideas / design strategy and its development into a design scheme works and how it is responsive to the context. We must also show how the design has been developed into an “Experiential space” taking into account the considerations of users, context, function and experience.

PROJECT 3 : VISITOR INTERPRETIVE CENTRE (VIC)

Continuing from project 2B, we are required to continue with the development of ideas, into a more deeper thought compared to the previous conceptual stage. We are given several requirements, such as spaces included, maximum floor area and so on.The VIC will serve 2 purposes, to provide a physical point of reference with visual significance that keeps alive the culture/history/memory/essence of the site; and also to provide accommodation to house and display relevant material and interpretive material for public access and information.
